Kiwi AI is a free educational mobile application from Blackboard Studio S.r.l., an Italian startup headquartered in Milan. Formerly Kiwinote, it launched on the App Store in December 2024 and rebranded during 2025. It carries a 4.9-star rating and claims over 500,000 students across more than 100 languages.

The feature set covers the full study artifact stack: audio recording, PDF, or video transcription into text notes; transformation into flashcards and quizzes; and chat with the app to explore note content. A redesigned chat with real-time streaming and spaced-repetition review on flashcards arrived in recent updates, powered by GPT-5 and a proprietary Kiwi+ model.

Access spans iOS, Android, and web. The Pro plan runs $8.99 per month. The free tier limits users to two notes every 48 hours — enough to evaluate the product, not enough to replace a study workflow.

Why the Economics Work (For Now)

The macro reason this category exists is inference cost collapse. DeepSeek's V3 training cost of $5.6 million for a frontier-class model proved frontier performance no longer requires frontier-scale spending. OpenAI's CEO noted that DeepSeek's R1 runs 20 to 50 times cheaper than OpenAI's comparable model, with a task costing $50 per million tokens on OpenAI dropping to $1 to $2 on DeepSeek.

The cost of running GPT-class intelligence through a student's lecture notes dropped by an order of magnitude in eighteen months. That is what makes an $8.99/month student app financially coherent. Kiwi AI did not cause this. It is a direct beneficiary of a structural tailwind that gets stronger without the company doing anything.
