OpenAI Tripled ChatGPT Advertisers to 60,000 by Slashing Prices
The lab that called advertising a last resort now runs Meta's old playbook, staffed by Meta's old people, at Meta's old prices minus the margin.

In October 2024, Sam Altman called advertising in AI chatbots "uniquely unsettling" and a "last resort for us as a business model." Two years later, it's the whole plan.
OpenAI is not experimenting with ads. It is rebuilding Meta's ad business inside ChatGPT, with Meta's own people, on Meta's own org chart, racing to fill inventory before anyone asks why the free tier exists.
The numbers are not subtle. ChatGPT's advertiser base roughly tripled to 60,000 between late August and early October, by New Street Research's count, as OpenAI cut prices and expanded its sales team. One agency founder said his software clients pay about $5 per ChatGPT click, against $30 to $50 per click on Google. That is not organic demand.
You do not triple an advertiser base by accident. Close to half of OpenAI's roughly 140 ad employees were hired in Q3, more from Meta than anywhere else. Ad chief Dave Dugan reorganized sales into industry teams the way Meta and Google do. This is not inspiration. It is a transplant.
The pricing tells the same story. ChatGPT ads launched at $60 CPM in February, a bet that conversational intent was worth triple what Meta charges. By March–April, CPMs had dropped to $25 in certain pilot categories. Cutting price to chase small business isn't growth strategy. It's cash-velocity strategy, and those have different endings.
The official line: OpenAI said ads let "more people benefit from our tools with fewer usage limits" and promised to keep responses "driven by what's objectively useful, never by advertising." Translation: we needed revenue badly enough to build Meta's sales apparatus, but the chatbot answering your question and the ad underneath it are definitely unrelated systems that definitely stay that way forever.

The actual risk is simpler. Axios named it: advertising "risks upending one of the key selling points of AI chatbots — that they work for the users, not for the advertiser." That was the whole pitch against Google and Meta. It's gone now.
The urgency makes sense once you see the math. Ad revenue hit a $1 billion annualized pace in late August, leaving OpenAI likely to miss the $2.4 billion it projected to investors for 2026. The long-term pitch is bigger: OpenAI expects $2.5 billion in ad revenue this year and $100 billion by 2030, assuming 2.75 billion weekly users by then. Outside analysts aren't buying it. Emarketer projects U.S. standalone chatbot ads will reach only $5.41 billion by 2030, roughly 90% below OpenAI's target.
Unlike Meta in 2012, OpenAI doesn't own a captive audience. Claude stays ad-free. Perplexity walked away from ads over trust concerns. If ad load climbs on the free tier, the exit costs a user nothing but a new tab. OpenAI is betting on switching costs and brand habit to cover the gap Meta never had: users with somewhere else to go.
What to watch: whether OpenAI introduces a paid tier specifically sold as ad-free, how fast ad density climbs on free tier now that the sales org is staffed, and whether Q4 numbers show the $2.4 billion target closing or widening.
