Stripe Bought the Neutral Party
OpenRouter's entire value proposition was that it had no skin in the game. Stripe has all the skin. The pattern points to a quiet conflict of interest now sitting between 8 million developers and every model they route.

There is one sentence that explains why OpenRouter became worth anything: it did not care which model you picked.
That sentence is now owned by Stripe.
Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, a startup that helps companies switch between AI models, for more than $7 billion. The consensus read is that Stripe is diversifying into AI infrastructure, getting closer to developers, owning more of the stack. The consensus is missing the point.
The Moat Was Neutrality. Stripe Just Bought It to Fill It.
OpenRouter's foundation is neutrality: it does not sell its own models, only scheduling and billing, so developers bet it will not favor any vendor. That bet is now structurally compromised. Not because Stripe is evil, but because Stripe is a business.
A customer writes once, then swaps between OpenAI, Anthropic, or a cheaper open-weight alternative without touching code, with the router picking on cost, speed, or availability. It takes roughly 5% of inference spend passing through. That 5% skim on neutral pass-through is clean. The same 5% in the hands of a payments company with commercial relationships across the AI supply chain is not.
Here is the conflict: Stripe also processes payments for Anthropic and OpenAI, and now owns a business whose pitch is moving spend away from both, toward cheaper models including Chinese open weights. Those processing relationships are worth more than OpenRouter. Which way does routing lean when Stripe chooses between processing revenue and stated neutrality? The pattern points to one answer, and it is not the one developers want.
Translation: "We do not comment on rumors or speculation" — Stripe's response to TechCrunch — means the governance questions are already someone else's problem.

The Price Tag Is a Confession
The price exceeds $7 billion, more than five times the $1.3 billion valuation from a funding round months earlier. OpenRouter's revenue was roughly $1 million at end-2024, climbed to $5 million by May 2025, hit $10 million by October, and surged to $50 million by early 2026. Fifty million dollars in revenue against $7 billion is 140x. That multiple only works if Stripe extracts value from the routing layer faster than the market can fork it.
Stripe paid for lock-in, not traffic.
OpenAI, Anthropic, and open-weight providers treat OpenRouter as a distribution channel. Under Stripe, it becomes a billing intermediary with token-level visibility into cross-lab demand. That changes negotiating dynamics: the routing layer now has a commercial parent with its own interests, and providers must decide how much distribution leverage they cede to a payments company.
If OpenRouter stays neutral, Stripe overpaid by roughly $6.5 billion. If it does not, every developer using it has been silently bought.
Those are the only two outcomes.
What to Watch
Watch OpenRouter's terms of service for language around preferred routing, promoted providers, or revenue-share arrangements. Watch whether Anthropic — which captures 46% of OpenRouter's platform revenue with just 12% of its traffic — tightens or loosens aggregator terms now that a payments competitor owns the aggregator. Watch which LLM providers immediately negotiate distribution deals with Stripe. If a credibly neutral open-source routing layer gains serious traction in the next 90 days, the developer community is voting with its API keys.

- Rohan Paul on X: "OpenRouter earns money mainly by charging 5.5% when customers purchase credits for model usage. A $1,000 credit purchase therefore creates about $55 in platform revenue before expenses. It passes model providers’ listed inference prices through without adding another usage markup. You pay OpenRouter for one account, one API, easy switching, and fallback across many models. OpenRouter handles separate provider accounts, billing, keys, routing, and compatibility while you still pay token c
