Your $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra Bets on Apps That Don't Exist Yet

Microsoft and Nvidia priced the RTX Spark flagship at MacBook Pro money. The hardware is real. Whether developers actually build for it is the $2,599 question nobody answered on stage.

TITLE: Your $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra Bets on Apps That Don't Exist Yet

Microsoft will give you up to $1,000 cash back if you trade in your MacBook Pro for a Surface Laptop Ultra. That offer is sitting on the Microsoft Store page right now, next to a starting price of $2,599.99. Nobody puts a MacBook Pro trade-in bounty on a product page by accident.

The verdict: the specs are real, the price is real, and neither one is the story. The story is whether anyone writes software for this thing.

At Wednesday's event in San Francisco, Microsoft and Nvidia unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra with an 18-core Grace CPU, a 5,120-core Blackwell GPU, and 24GB of unified memory. Eight configurations run $2,599 to $5,899, shipping October 16. The chip is capable: up to one petaflop of FP4 AI performance with up to 128 GB of unified memory. That's not a spec sheet built to undercut Apple. A 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 Pro started at $1,999; the M5 Pro starts at $2,199. Microsoft priced its flagship above both.

The Pitch Is Agentic AI. The Proof Is a Container.

Microsoft announced general availability of Microsoft Execution Containers, OS-level infrastructure for running AI agents on Windows. Satya Nadella anchored it in Agent 365, Microsoft IQ, and Copilot, while Windows chief Pavan Davuluri called Windows 11 the most secure platform for AI agents, highlighting containment.

Translation: we built a box to keep autonomous software from wrecking your files while it runs. That's a real engineering problem. It is not a reason to spend $2,599 on a laptop.

The demos showed GitHub Copilot and Gears of War: E-Day at 60 fps, with Call of Duty arriving on RTX Spark in 2027. If you're buying this to run the next Call of Duty, you're buying a year early.

Who Actually Builds for It

One real signal matters: Georgi Gerganov, founder of llama.cpp, said RTX Spark multiplies context processing in a portable chassis, and optimized models running locally will unlock personal, private agents. That's genuine open-source endorsement, not Microsoft marketing. But one inference library is not an ecosystem.

The laptop runs Windows 11 on an Arm-based NVIDIA RTX Spark platform. Apps not built for Arm run through Prism, Windows' built-in emulator. Emulation is the tell.

Apple spent three years getting native Arm apps before asking you to pay Apple Silicon prices. Microsoft is asking those prices on day one, with emulation as the fallback.

What to Watch

Count production apps, not demos. If RTX Spark has a real developer base by spring, that $2,599 buys you the on-device AI layer Apple sold first. If it doesn't, you bought a Windows laptop with an idle GPU, and Nvidia collected the margin either way.
