Your $299 Apple Home Hub Really Costs $429 to Mount
HomeView ships Nov. 13 at $299, but the wall version arrives with no mount, no adapter, and a support page that explains exactly how to make it stop working.

Apple wants you to believe $299 buys you a smart home. It buys you the right to keep paying.
HomeView, Apple's first smart display hub, went up for preorder on October 13 alongside a refreshed Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini 2. It comes in two versions, one with a speaker base and another for wall mounting, both priced at $299, shipping November 13. That's the headline. It is not the bill.
Hub
---
Power Mount USB-C Wall Connector
$358.95
Power Mount AC Wired
$378.95
Power Mount PoE Wired (early 2027)
$428.95
Apple's own spec page says the wall-mounted model needs a compatible wall mount, USB-C cable, and power adapter, each sold separately, with none included in the box. The cheapest path to a wall-mounted unit runs $358.95 with the Power Mount USB-C Wall Connector, up to $428.95 for the PoE Wired version. The tabletop model ships with a 1.5-meter USB-C cable and 30W power adapter inside. Buy the version Apple actually wants on your wall, and you pay a premium for mounting it.
The adapter is the tell
The wall-mounted HomeView requires a USB-C power adapter rated for at least 20W with support for 9V at 2.22A or higher. Get the voltage spec wrong and the device displays a "Not Enough Power" warning instead of your front door camera feed.
Apple will tell you this is a safety spec. Translation: we built a hub tight enough around a proprietary power contract that the wrong $15 charger turns your smart home command center into a warning light.
This is the part of the Apple playbook that never changes: control the connector, control the ecosystem. The iPhone did it with Lightning. The Watch did it with proprietary bands. Now the doorbell does it with a voltage floor.

Who actually makes the lock
Apple isn't building the deadbolt itself. HomeView connects to smart home cameras, deadbolt locks, and thermostats from LG and Schneider under the Apple Home Collection brand, available in December. That's the smarter play and the more dangerous one. Apple isn't taking on hardware manufacturing risk. It's taking the margin on the software gate every one of those devices has to pass through.
If you already own Eve or Logitech HomeKit gear, you're the target market. Apple doesn't need you to buy a new lock tomorrow. It needs the hub cheap enough and the integration tight enough that replacing your existing HomeKit accessories over two years looks easier than leaving.
HomeView won't be available in the European Union due to regulations. Brussels' interoperability rules are exactly the kind of friction that keeps a hub from locking a doorbell to one company's app.
If your lock, thermostat, and doorbell all route through one company's hub, one company's app, and one company's power spec, you haven't built a smart home. You've built a dependency with a battery.
What to watch: whether Apple cuts wall-mount accessory pricing once reviewers flag the $429 math; the first reported lockout where a bricked HomeView takes a front door lock down with it; and whether EU regulators use the bloc's exclusion from launch as an opening to scrutinize HomeKit gating once the hardware does arrive there.
