Same Nvidia Chip. Dell Charges $1,200 More.

Dell and Microsoft put identical Nvidia RTX Spark silicon in two laptops. The price gap is pure brand tax, and the real cost of the 128GB tier is still a secret.

Your $3,799 Dell Costs $1,200 More Than Microsoft's Same Chip

Same chip. Same 18-core Grace CPU. Same 5,120-core Blackwell GPU. One laptop costs $2,599.99. The other costs $3,799.99. The difference is a Dell badge, an OLED panel, and $1,200 you will not get back.

That is the base-tier math on Nvidia's new RTX Spark platform. Dell's XPS 16 Creator Edition launches at $3,799.99 with an 18-core CPU, 5,120-core GPU, 32GB memory, and 512GB SSD. Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra ships the same day at $2,599 with the same 18-core Grace CPU, same 5,120-core Blackwell GPU, and 24GB unified RAM.

The consensus is that RTX Spark is a real leap for local AI on a laptop, and the price reflects genuine new silicon. The silicon part is true.

The price part is where the story breaks down.

The Same Chip, Two Price Tags

To be fair to Dell, its base model ships with 32GB of memory against Microsoft's 24GB. That is not worth $1,200. Memory upgrades in this market run in the hundreds, not four figures. The rest of the gap is Dell charging for a 16-inch tandem OLED display with 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage and up to 1,000 nits peak brightness, plus the XPS name on the lid.

Nvidia's pitch for RTX Spark is that the CPU and GPU share one memory pool the way Apple's M-series chips let both processors work from the same physical memory pool. Translation: the unified-memory trick is real engineering, but Nvidia sells the same N1X chip to Dell and Microsoft at whatever price each OEM thinks its customer will swallow, and Nvidia gets paid the same either way.

Dell's $3,799.99 price only buys the entry-level part. The full spec with the 6,144-core GPU and 20-core CPU, plus the 64GB and 128GB memory tiers, has no published Dell price yet. If Dell's top tier tracks Microsoft's pricing multiple off a higher base, you are looking at a laptop north of $7,000 before anyone asks whether the fans can keep it cool. Microsoft already showed its hand: the RTX Spark laptop scales to $5,899, more than double its $2,599 floor.

Who Actually Needs This

Nvidia is marketing RTX Spark as the hardware that runs real AI models at your desk. Microsoft claims its version can run AI models with more than 120 billion parameters locally, with select configurations delivering up to 1 petaflop of peak AI compute. That is a genuine capability nobody's laptop had eighteen months ago.

But the pitch for the entire category was supposed to be accessibility: AI at home, not AI in a server rack. Microsoft is positioning its $2,599 floor as a shot at Apple, undercutting the $2,999 16-inch MacBook Pro. Dell is doing the opposite, pricing above the MacBook Pro and daring creators to pay the XPS premium for identical Nvidia guts.

Both companies are right about their own math. Nvidia does not care which one you pick. It collects on the chip regardless of which logo sits above the keyboard.

You are deciding whether the badge is worth $1,200, and whether the laptop you actually want is the $5,000-plus configuration that can run the models Nvidia is advertising, or the $3,799 floor model that technically qualifies as an RTX Spark laptop while running the smaller chip inside it.

What to watch: whether Dell publishes pricing for the 64GB and 128GB tiers and how far above $3,799 it lands relative to Microsoft's $5,899 ceiling. Watch for Lenovo, HP, and Asus RTX Spark pricing to land inside, above, or below this $2,599-to-$3,799 gap, because that range is now the entire shape of the category.
